- The Denver Nuggets bounced back from another 3-1 deficit to close out the series over the Clippers
- The Clippers were only a win away from the Western Conference Finals before blowing the lead
- Jokes and memes about the Clippers’ Collapse were abundant after Game 7
Blowing a 3-1 lead in the NBA’s Western Conference Semifinals has put the Los Angeles Clippers under the ridicule of the Internet. Jokes and memes were abundant immediately after the Denver Nuggets finished another historic come-from-behind win, 104-89, in Tuesday’s Game 7 of the NBA playoffs.
Considering the talented roster of the Clippers, many were expecting them to compete in a Western Conference Finals battle against their crosstown counterparts, the L.A. Lakers. After beating the Nuggets in Game 4 to take a 3-1 series lead, Doc Rivers’ team dropped three straight matches that sent his team home and social media into a frenzy.
The basketball community, including fellow NBA players, chipped in the roasting of the Clippers following the unexpected turn of events in the series.
Sports outlet Bleacher Report referenced the effort the Nuggets displayed to the same energy LeBron James had when he conquered the 73-9 Golden State Warriors.
Memes were also abundant in how the Clippers were so close to their first Westen Conference Finals berth but lost control in the end.
Portland Trail Blazers stars Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum had their share of fun on Twitter.
The recent loss highlighted also the shooting struggles of the superstar duo of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. The two went scoreless and missed all 11 of their attempts in the fourth quarter of the game.
This was also the third time in Doc Rivers’ career where he squandered a 3-1 playoff lead.
“I’m the coach and I’ll take any blame for it. But we didn’t meet our expectations, clearly,” Rivers said, as reported by ESPN.
The collapse had Lakers legend Magic Johnson exclaim how the Purple and Gold remain as the top team in Los Angeles.
The Clippers had no answer for the Nuggets as Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic were on point the entire game. The All-Star big man tallied a triple-double by the end of the third quarter and finished with 16 points, 22 rebounds and 13 assists. This was accompanied by Murray’s 40-point outburst where he dished out five assists and drained six baskets from beyond the arc.
The Internet continues to buzz after the historic feat by Denver as the Nuggets prepare to face the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.
