Eagle’s Restaurant, an iconic Birmingham soul food restaurant and a favorite of celebrity chef Andrew Zimmern, is reopening Sunday, Oct. 11, after being closed nearly seven months because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
“It’s time to go back to work,” Eagle’s owner Delores Banks told AL.com this afternoon. “Nobody had a clue that it was going to take this long.”
The restaurant is reopening for pick-up orders only, Banks said. The dining area will remain closed indefinitely.
The restaurant served its last customers on Sunday, March 15, and closed the next day, Banks said.
In the interim, Banks has installed two to-go windows at the front entrance of the restaurant for customers to pick up their orders.
Eagle’s will accept advance orders only, and customers may place and pay for their orders in advance through the Eagle’s website. They will not be allowed place orders at the pick-up window, Banks said.
Those customers who do not have internet access may call 205-903-2453 to order via text message.
“It’s walk-up, pick-up service only,” Banks said. “I don’t want people coming up to the window to try to place an order. We are trying to make it easy.”
Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sundays through Fridays. The restaurant is closed on Saturdays.
Famous for its oxtails, neck bones, fried pork chops, turnip greens, candied yams and other soul food favorites, Eagle’s Restaurant is at 2610 16th St. North, about one block south of the ACIPCO plant in north Birmingham. It opened in 1951.
Zimmern put Eagle’s on the national map when he visited the restaurant in 2013 for his Travel Channel show “Bizarre Food America.”
